Open Notebook: Getting Started Guide

Open Notebook is a privacy-focused research and knowledge management tool included with the Aegis platform. Import sources from any format, ask AI-powered questions across your content, and generate insights from your collected knowledge.

Live at: https://notebooks.aegisagent.ai

What You Can Do

Open Notebook transforms how you conduct research:

  • Import anything: PDFs, YouTube videos, web articles, RSS feeds, raw text
  • Ask questions: Natural language queries across all your sources
  • Get citations: Responses include specific source references
  • Generate audio: Create podcast-style overviews of your notebooks
  • Full API access: 60+ REST endpoints for programmatic control

Quick Start

Create a notebook: Click "+ New Notebook" and give it a focused name like "AI Agent Memory Patterns" rather than generic names like "Research."

Add sources: Upload PDFs, paste URLs, or import RSS feeds. Each source is automatically processed, embedded, and made searchable.

Ask questions: Use the "Ask and Search" feature to query across all sources. The AI synthesizes answers from your collected materials.

Example questions that work well: - "What are the common patterns across these papers?" - "Summarize the key arguments from source X" - "Identify contradictions between these approaches"

Best Practices

One topic per notebook keeps searches focused and responses relevant. We maintain separate notebooks for each geopolitical region and technical domain.

Name sources descriptively after upload. "RAG Architecture Patterns (2024)" beats "document.pdf" when you're searching later.

Iterate your questions from broad to specific. Start with "Summarize the key insights" then drill into "Explain the memory consolidation approach in detail."

Integration

Open Notebook integrates with Aegis via MCP tools. The platform uses it for:

  • Geopolitical research synthesis (5 regional notebooks with 47+ sources)
  • AI agent architecture documentation
  • Technical reference libraries
